Deepti Naval was born on 22nd August 1957 in Amritsar, India. Her years as a student were spent in New York at the City University and later at the Hunter College in Manhattan, from where she got a degree in Fine Arts.

She married film director Prakash Jha in 1985 but the marriage broke off in 2002. They had adopted a daughter Disha. She was linked with Nana Patekar and was engaged to Vinod Pandit who passed away. She set up the Vinod Pandit Charitable Trust to educate the girl child.

Deepti Naval’s contribution to cinema was honoured with Tribute Honoree at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles in 2007.

1979 to 1983  Naval was first seen in Shyam Benegal’s Junoon (1979) with the likes of Shabana Azmi and Shashi Kapoor. In Ek Baar Phir (1980) she played Kalpana who walks out of a bad marriage to be with her lover.

Career

Deepti Naval started her film career with Ek Baar Phir in 1980. She is known to be a sensitive actress and was a part of the art films and light films of the 80's. Saath Saath , Chashme Buddoor and Mirch Masala are some of her films from the era. She was often cast with Farooq Shaikh. Though considered as talented as Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil she somehow did not achieve the same stature in terms of awards or memorable casts. Once she moved out of lead roles, she portrayed character roles in mainstream Hindi films but was not satisfied with the roles she got and took a break. Of late she has made a comeback of sorts with films like Bawandar and Freaky Chakra. In April Naval was recognized as the 2007 Tribute Honoree of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. She is directing her first film as a director in Do Paise Ki Dhoop,Char Aane Ki Barish which stars Manisha Koirala. She published a collection of her Hindi poems in 1981, entitled 'LAMHA LAMHA'. She also starred in the critically acclaimed Punjabi film Marhi Da Diva (1989).
Deepti Naval is an acclaimed actor. After her schooling she migrated to the United States, where she was educated at the City University of New York and received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at Hunter College in Manhattan.

She made her debut with the movie Ek Baar Phir in the year 1979 and has acted in more than 60 films since then. Among these are Chashmebaddoor, Kamla, Mirch Masala, Ankahi, Main Zinda Hoon, Panchvati, and more recently, Leela and Freaky Chakra. Deepti Naval also wrote and directed Thodasa Aasmaan, a TV serial about women, and produced a travel show called The Path Less Traveled. A selection of poems in Hindi, Lamha-Lamha was published in 1983 and more recently, MapinLit brought out a new collection called BLACK WIND and Other Poems. She is also a painter and photographer with several exhibitions to her credit and enjoys trekking in the remote mountains of Himachal and Ladakh. Deepti Naval runs the Vinod Pandit Charitable Trust, set up in memory of her late companion, for the education of the girl child.

She started working for a radio-station airing a lot of Hindi programmes. She got opportunities to interview a whole lot of film personalities like Sunil Dutt, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Dev Anand, Gulzar, Sadhana, Raj Kapoor, etc.

Her debut movie was Junoon which she signed earlier but her filmi career started in Ek Baar Phir in 1980 which released before the above.

She is known to be a sensitive actress and was a part of the art films and realisitic films of the 80's. Chashme Buddoor (1981) which was a light hearted comedy by Sai Paranzpe epitomised her as Miss Chamko, the sales girl who sold washing powder. Next came Saath Saath (1982) where she played the sensitive college going girl who marries against her parents wishes impressed by the idealism of her lover. How the material world takes on them later on is displayed perfectly in the film.In both the films, she was cast opposite Farooque Shaikh. In Angoor (1983) though she did not play the lead role, she still managed to make a mark in this comedy of errors.

The following years saw her doing a variety of roles in Katha and Rang Birangee (1983), Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho & Hip Hip Hurray (1984), and amidst these few art films too like Mirch Masala, Damul and Ankahee all released in 1985. Though by this time, she was recognized as an actress of substance, directors still did not sign her up for prestigious projects as she wasn’t the typical glamorous girl. After this, she moved on to do character roles and second lead roles in numerous films. Some of the films during this period did not click at the box-office. The Feroze Khan directed film; Yalgaar (1992) Mr Azaad (1994) and Jai Vikranta (1995) failed to live upto the audience’s expectations. There were lot of expectations from the Shah Rukh starrer Guddu (1995) where she played the super star’s mother. However this film too fell flat inspite of its grand star cast. Following these were Bawander (2000) and Leela (2002) which though didn’t do well, Deepti Naval’s performance was noticed and appreciated. In 2003 came Freaky Chakra a multiplex film about a middle aged woman in a relationship with a teenaged boy. Deepti Naval played this character to the hilt and was acclaimed by one and all. 

Naval was recognized as the 2007 Tribute H Honorée of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.

In 2008, Deepti willl be seen in Rang Rasiya and Firaaq.

She was at one time married to filmmaker and director Prakash Jha. She was engaged to Vinod Pandit before he died. Besides Mumbai she also has a home in New York where she spends a lot of her time. She has an elder sister and younger brother. She has specialized in Painting and also had Photography as one of her subjects for three semesters.
