Geeta Bali born Harikirtan Kaur was born in a Mohyal family in pre-partition Punjab as a Sikh. Her family moved to Bombay and was living in near poverty when she started to get breaks in films. Bali became a star in the 1950s. She had also worked earlier with her future brother-in-law Raj Kapoor in Bawre Nain and with her future father-in-law Prithviraj Kapoor in Anand Math. She married Shammi Kapoor on 24 August 1955 who was 1 year younger than her but not yet a star. She was his first wife. She had two children with Shammi. She left behind a son Aditya aged 8 and a daughter Kanchan aged 3. Later her niece, Yogeeta Bali also made it into films. Some of her hit films are Bawre Nain, Baazi, Baaz, Jaal, Albela, Vachan, Kavi, etc. She was known as the finest dancer, singer and the actress film industry had in the 40\'s.

This lively dancer starred many films including Kidar Sharma\'s Suhaag Raat, Guru Dutt\'s Bazzi, Bazz, Jaal, Sailaab and the hit musical Albela. Gifted with effervescence, Geeta Bali crossed path with a classic and decided to produce and act in Rano - a cinematic expression of Rajinder Singh Bedi’s novel on widow remarriage - Ek Chaddar Maili Si. Her performances in Baazi and Albela made her a much-admired star. However, when Geeta decided to make a comeback to films with an author-backed role in Rano, and left on an outdoor shoot to Punjab, she contacted the dreaded disease. She died from contacting small pox, a disease she could have easily vaccinated herself from. She was rushed back to the best possible treatment in Mumbai but her temperature rose to 107 degrees; and she succumbed to the disease. In the winter of 1965, Geeta was cremated at Banganga, close to the Mumbai temple where she had married Shammi Kapoor. Geeta Bali\'s death at the shockingly young age of 36 exhibits one of the strange quirks of fate. She passed away on January 21, 1965. Her secretary was Surinder Kapoor, father of producer Boney Kapoor and actor Anil Kapoor. Unlike other actresses who gave up films after marrying into the Kapoor family, Bali kept acting until her death.
